| The Formula 1. Add the sum of all short term acquisitions, all short term player losses, all short term free agent gains, all short term free agent losses and all short term prospects for the season in question. 2. Add the sum of all long term acquisitions, all long term player losses, all long term free agent gains, all long term free agent losses, and all long term prospect losses for the same season. (If a GM participated in a team formulation draft, he accrues long term points ((but not short term points)) for the subsequent season performances of players he drafts as well. They are tabulated in the same fashion.) Divide this total by two. 3. The sum of these two steps is the GM rating for the season. 4. To calculate a general manager’s rating over any period of seasons, divide the ratings in each category by the number of seasons and sum the totals. Note: Except in rare instances where he takes over in mid- season, a general manager cannot have a long-term rating in his first full season as a general manager. Therefore, when calculating a GM’s career rating, divide his long term scores by the number of seasons minus one. 5. In cases where a GM leaves an organization, acquisitions made by that GM continue to count as part of his residual rating until one of the following things happens: 1. Players who had been acquired by the departed GM are re-signed under terms outlined in the paragraph concerning free agents. 2. The GM who replaces the departed GM is himself replaced. |

| The Terms 1. "Acquired" means obtained via trade, sale or via waiver from another major league team in exchange for some consideration. 2. "Traded" means sent to another major league team in a trade, sale or waiver arrangement. 3. "Free Agent" means signed at the expiration of a previous contract, or following release from such a contract. Also included in this category are players re-signed or extended by the same team if those players are or would be qualified for free agent eligibility, or if they are signed to a multi-year sign contract. 5. "Product" means having played the equivalent of at least one season with the parent team's farm system. A player is no longer a product once he attains free agent eligibility, or signs a multi-year extension. 7. "FA Lost" means those players who left the organization as free agents or were released and subsequently played with another major league team. 8. "Short-term" gain or loss is the BFW or PW gained or lost as a result of the movement (by any method) of a particular player either in the season during which a player is acquired or traded (if the move occurs in-season), or (if during the off-season) in the season immediately following. 9. "Long-term" gain represents the BFWs or PWs generated by a player in any season subsequent to the season of his acquisition for the duration of his current contract with the team, or until he attains free agent leverage, or until he signs a multi-season contract extension. 10. Long-term loss is calculated using a sliding scale of all the BFWs or PWs generated by players over the first five seasons subsequent to the season in which short-term loss is calculated. The sliding scale is as follows: 100 percent of BFW or PW in the first season of long-term loss, 80 percent in the second season, 60 percent in the third season, 40 percent in the fourth season, and 20 percent in the fifth season. Following the fifth season of long-term loss, no value is accrued. If the player is reacquired by the team during that period, calculation of long- term loss is halted. 11. “Residual rating” is the impact on a team of the moves made by a former GM. It is calculated on the same basis as long-term gain and loss. |
